SUBSIDIES WEAKEN THE ECONOMY – CHIKWANDA

“…the fuel subsidy favours the urban population relative to the people in rural areas, who are also confronted with the double misfortune of receiving very negligible benefits from the maize subsidy. While Government is fully aware that high fuel costs are passed on to the travelling public, it is also important to realise that subsidies in the end weaken our already fragile economy…

“…every Zambian is aware of the deplorable conditions of our transport infrastructure, health facilities, and education facilities etc.  which contribute to the social and economic well-being of the most vulnerable in our society. It is our considered view in the Patriotic Front Government that investments in the aforementioned sectors will lift the most vulnerable in our society out of poverty.”
