MINISTER OF FINANCE MARGARET MWANAKATWE has called on staff in her Ministry to become willing facilitators of better performance for both the public and private sector in Zambia so that the country’s total national productivity and growth are elevated.
“As Government, we need to be resolute in addressing the encumbrances which our institutions face in programme implementation by transitioning from writing documents to operationalizing agreed programs,” said the Minister during her ongoing departmental orientation programme in the Ministry of Finance.
Mrs. Mwanakatwe implored her staff to work with stakeholders and partners in the public sector, private sector, and international community to help the country to achieve and sustain high performance levels in economic governance in order to industrialize, build wealth, create jobs, and accelerate economic growth towards achievement of the Vision 2030.
She reiterated the Government’s resolve to engage the International Monetary Fund [IMF] on the need to resume programme discussions. To prepare for fresh and better engagement with the IMF, Mrs. Mwanakatwe added that there is need for the Ministry of Finance to clean-up all debt related data and ensure that the data sets are accurate and complete in order to facilitate better engagement when talks resume.
MEANWHILE, for the second week running on a daily basis, congratulations for Mrs. Mwanakatwe’s appointment as Minister of Finance have continued pouring in from both the local and international community.
ACTING AUDITOR GENERAL RON MWAMBWA was one of the first to send congratulations to the Minister and to wish her best of luck and continued success as she performs her national duties.
“I have no doubt that your appointment will stir the Ministry of Finance to even greater heights,” he said, adding that, “you can count on the support of my office in your endeavours as Minister of Finance,” stated Mr. Mwambwa in a letter to Mrs. Mwanakatwe.
AND The United States based EMERGING MARKETS INVESTORS ALLIANCE is among the influential entities that have sent congratulatory messages to the Minister. The Alliance has also invited Mrs. Mwanakatwe to participate as a speaker at the round table discussion on fiscal transparency and governance to be held in Washington, DC, United States of America, on the sidelines of the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings to be held in April, 2018.
In another development, the Italian Government has said it remains committed to enhancing economic relations with Zambia. ITALIAN AMBASSADOR TO ZAMBIA FILIPPO SCAMMACCA DEL MURGO said this in a congratulatory letter to the Minister.
Mr. SCAMMACCA DEL MURGO stated that, working in collaboration with FONDAZIONE AMBROSETTI, an Italian Think-Tank and the Italian Industry Association [CONFINDUSTRIA], the Italian Government has organized an investor’s mission to Zambia to explore opportunities in energy, agro production and processing, copper value addition, manufacturing, and infrastructure development.
The United Kingdom based GLOBAL TRADE REVIEW [EXPORTA GROUP], a leading entity in trade and export finance network events also delivered the firms favourable compliments and congratulations to Mrs. Mwanakatwe in a letter delivered by the Groups Envoy, Alistair Johnson on behalf of PETER GUBBINS, The Group Chief Executive Officer.
AND FINAL FRONTIER AFRICA MANAGING DIRECTOR EUGENE OWUSU AGYEMANG has said the appointment of Mrs. Mwanakatwe to the portfolio of Minister of Finance is a demonstration that President Edgar Chagwa Lungu believes in continuity and transformation.
“I have also followed and read about the works of Minister Mwanakatwe from the time she served in the United Kingdom, France, Uganda, and Ghana and I have no doubt that her wealth of expertise, exposure, and the huge network that she has created over the years set her in good stead to refine the implementation of Zambia’s economic transformation programme and achieve big things for the country,” said Mr. AGYEMANG.
MEANWHILE, the Board and Management of the Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry [ZACCI] has also tendered congratulations to Mrs. Mwanakatwe. Many other private and public sector organisations have over the last two weeks delivered congratulatory messages to Zambia’s New Minister of Finance.
